Sumantra Mukherjee

1981, India

In the neighbourhoods of Kolkata, comprised primarily of working class citizens, for many, it is often hard to distinguish between what is good and what is intrusive in new ways of life, and determining what is perceived as unfair and the beauty of a more traditional way of life.

Sumantra Mukherjee draws a great deal of his aesthetic from the people of these communities. By combining traditional artistic and craft practices, and addressing contemporary political injustices, Sumantra hopes to create artworks which speak both to the local audience, and to a wider public.
